"It's heartening to know that ex-Dharma Bum, Johnny Powell, is still teetering on the edge of troubled genius with this new clutch of soul-scraping, larynx-wobbling freak-folk vignettes. 'The Difficulties Of...' was recorded on the moorlands above Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire, which certainly captured Powell's perma-frown in all its icy fragility. And if you're thinking this all sounds a bit Bon Iver, you're right. Existential desperation informs the likes of 'A Supernatural Carnival of Demons' and the non-more-elegiac 'It's Playtime!' to the point where, if it wasn't for a need to hear the albums fateful denouement, you'd think there was no reason to carry on. For fans of Mount Eerie, The Mountain Goats and melancholic instability."
